What are the different types of IBD?

IBD is a broad term used to describe inflammatory processes in the digestive tract. It is a diverse group of diseases often differentiated into two broad categories, Crohn’s Disease, and Ulcerative Colitis

  1. Crohn’s Disease (CD):

CD can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. It causes inflammation that can go deep into the tissues, leading to symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, and fatigue. People with Crohn’s may also experience “skip lesions,” where healthy sections of the digestive tract are mixed with inflamed areas.

  1. Ulcerative Colitis (UC):

UC primarily affects the colon (large intestine) and rectum. It causes inflammation and sores (ulcers) on the inner lining of the colon, leading to symptoms like bloody diarrhea, urgency to go to the bathroom, and abdominal cramps. Unlike Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis mainly affects only the surface lining of the colon.

Both conditions are chronic and involve periods of flare-ups and remissions. Though the causes are not fully understood, a combination of genetic, immune, and environmental factors can play a role. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
