PEG TUBE PLACEMENT
SOMEONE MUST EITHER ACCOMPANY YOU OR IS AVAILABLE TO PICK YOU UP FROM THE APPOINTMENT AND STAY WITH YOU FOR 24 HOURS. We cannot perform a procedure without confirmation that someone will be accompanying you after. Sedation is given to keep you comfortable during the procedure. NO DRIVING FOR 24 HOURS – WAIVER MUST BE SIGNED ON THE DAY OF THE PROCEDURE
PREPARING FOR YOUR EXAMINATION: It is crucial for the success of your examination that your stomach is completely empty. Therefore, you MUST REFRAIN FROM EATING ANY FOOD FOR 12 HOURS AND FROM DRINKING ANY WATER FOR 4 HOURS BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED EXAMINATION. Following these guidelines is essential for a clear view during the procedure and to ensure your safety.

All individuals scheduled for PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy) Tube Placement will be administered a preoperative prophylaxis using cephalosporin or penicillin-based antibiotics. This is a preventative measure to minimize the risk of infection. To facilitate a smooth preparation process, we kindly request that you arrive at the facility 2 hours prior to your procedure's scheduled time. This ensures that we have sufficient time for all necessary pre-procedural arrangements.

UNDERSTANDING PEG TUBE PLACEMENT: The insertion of a feeding tube, known as percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), involves carefully placing a tube through the skin and into the stomach wall, directly accessing the stomach. This procedure is partially guided by an Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), a technique that employs a flexible tube with a light and camera to navigate and position the feeding tube accurately.

Feeding tubes become necessary when an individual is unable to eat or drink by mouth or cannot meet their nutritional requirements due to difficulty in swallowing or another medical condition. The primary goal of PEG feeding tube insertion is to ensure that patients receive the essential nutrients and hydration needed to maintain their health and support recovery, thereby improving their quality of life.

Remember, this procedure is performed by a trained specialist in a controlled medical environment to ensure both accuracy and your comfort.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE: Following the procedure, you will be escorted to our recovery area where you will rest until you are fully awake and deemed ready to safely return home. Upon discharge, our medical staff will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery. A dietician referral will be arranged. It is strongly advised that you spend the rest of the day resting to allow your body to recuperate fully.
