PICO SALAX PREP

SOMEONE MUST EITHER ACCOMPANY YOU OR IS AVAILABLE TO PICK YOU UP FROM THE APPOINTMENT AND STAY WITH YOU FOR 24 HOURS. We cannot perform a procedure without confirmation that someone will be accompanying you after. Sedation is given to keep you comfortable during the procedure. NO DRIVING FOR 24 HOURS – WAIVER MUST BE SIGNED ON THE DAY OF THE PROCEDURE
 

DIETARY RESTRICTIONS: 2-3 days prior to the procedure: STOP taking iron supplements and fiber supplements. AVOID foods that contain small, hard to digest foods like the following: Iron pills, nuts, seeds, berries, grapes,
multigrain breads/cereals, or sweet corn

 

DAY BEFORE COLONOSCOPY: Solid breakfast ok until 12pm. Then clear fluids.

DAY BEFORE COLONOSCOPY at 5pm, Dulcolax tablets x 2(10mg). At 7pm, take Pico-Salax 150ml(5oz) with cold water and stir(until dissolved). Drink the mixture. 

​

After drink 4 glasses of water(250ml/8oz each) over the next 1-2 hours. 

​

Bowel prep orders are faxed to your local pharmacy.  Nothing to eat or drink after 12am on day (after midnight) of your colonoscopy except home medications.

ON THE DAY OF YOUR COLONOSCOPY, (i.e. typically, at 5am for colonoscopy at 10am), at 5 am, mix 1 package of Pico-Salax with 150ml of cold water. Stir until resolved. Drink the mixture.

After, drink 4 glasses of clear liquids(250ml/8oz each) over the next 1-2 hours. 

It must be completed 4-6 hours before colonoscopy.

Nothing to eat or drink 3 hours before colonoscopy - including bowel prep.

if you're still having solid stools, please notify outpatient surgical services at Yarmouth Regional Hospital  as colonoscopy may need to be rescheduled.​

AFTER THE PROCEDURE: Following the procedure, you will be escorted to our recovery area where you will rest until you are fully awake and deemed ready to safely return home. Upon discharge, our medical staff will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery. It is strongly advised that you spend the rest of the day resting to allow your body to recuperate fully.

You might experience mild discomforts such as bloating or cramping; these are common and typically resolve within 24 hours. However, our team is here for you, so please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns or if your symptoms persist.
